Book NowWhat are orthotics?
Orthotics are specially-designed shoe inserts that can be created to treat an array of issues affecting the feet and ankles, and even some issues that affect the knees, legs and back. Orthotics are custom made using durable, comfortable materials and tailored to each individual’s specific needs and foot shape for optimal relief of pain and related symptoms, and they can also be used to treat problems with gait and balance. Structured to relieve excess stress and strain when walking and performing other movements, orthotics help redistribute pressures to relieve inflammation, irritation and other problems.
What issues can be treated with custom orthotics?
Because custom orthotics are designed for each individual patient, they can be used for an array of issues, including:
- heel pain
- balance problems
- gait abnormalities
- congenital defects or defects due to injury or disease
- bunions
- plantar fascia
- neuromas
- arch problems including flat feet
- hammer toes
In addition to treating existing symptoms, orthotics can also be designed to help people who are more prone to foot and ankle problems avoid those problems.
How are orthotics fitted?
Custom orthotics are fitted using state-of-the-art tools and methods to ensure the best fit. Fittings are performed in office, and measurements are sent to the lab where the orthotics will be created. Orthotics may be made of different types of materials, and they can be designed to fit many shoe types, including athletic shoes and high heels.
Why are custom orthotics better than the shoe inserts I can buy in the store?
Shoe inserts that are available in drugstores and other stores are designed for the general public based on very broad concepts of foot shape and foot problems. As a result, they may provide temporary relief at best, or at worst, they can make an underlying problem much worse, either by providing the wrong kind of support or by delaying proper care. Custom orthotics are designed for each individual patient using a doctor’s skills and experience to achieve long-term resolution of underlying problems. Plus, because custom orthotics are made of very durable materials, they last much, much longer than over-the-counter shoe inserts, making them a cost-effective option.
Is the cost of custom orthotics covered by medical insurance?
Most medical insurance including Medicare does provide complete or partial coverage for the cost of medically-necessary orthotic devices. Our office staff works closely with patients to determine the amount of coverage that’s available so patients can anticipate any out-of-pocket costs they may incur.
